XML English Abstract Print

چکیده:
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease caused by anomalous neuronal action that displays as persistent, irrational, frequent seizures with frothing at the mouth, leading to a significant global health burden. Valproic acid (VPA) is a widely prescribed antiepileptic drug (AED) that has demonstrated efficacy in treating various types of seizures. Besides its anticonvulsant properties, emerging evidence proposes that VPA employs neuroprotective efficacy, possibly improving the progression of epilepsy and mitigating its related neurological damage. It represents a drug of choice in children and adults with epilepsy, with either general or focal seizures. This review highlights the signalling pathways modulated by VPA with a translational purpose, preclinical and clinical studies investigating the neuroprotective mechanisms supporting VPA's neuroprotective role in epilepsy, and identifies the areas for future research.
